Turkey is a medium sized, black bird with a yellowish breast. The male Turkey is bigger than the female. Because of their size and reproductive pattern, the domestic turkeys have been placed on the endangered species list by the International Conservation Association.


The domestic turkeys are raised primarily for meat and are susceptible to a variety of diseases, including salmonella. Salmonella is caused by the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, which can infect birds if they are kept on antibiotics. The disease does not usually infect humans but can be dangerous to those who are immunocompromised or suffer from impaired immunity. To prevent the occurrence and spread of salmonella, turkey meat should only be consumed after the bird has been cleaned and killed using a sanitizer.


The bird remains contaminated, even if it dies naturally. Therefore, it is necessary to clean carcasses thoroughly using antibacterial chemicals such as diphenylamine and other strong chemicals. Diphenylamine can kill bacteria in a non-agarious manner and has been found to be effective in reducing the number of Salmonella contamination found in ground turkey products.


Turkey meat has very little taste and it is difficult to impart a flavor in ground turkey products. An easy way to improve the flavor is by marinating the meat for an extended period of time and frying it before cooking. Another trick that the makers of Turkey products use is to coat the outside of the bird with a white substance that helps to trap the flavor of the marinade. This coating also prevents the turkey from drying out while it cooks. When searching for turkey recipes, make sure that you avoid those that call for ground beef or chicken and instead substitute with turkey.


Turkey has a high fat content, which makes it a poor choice when consumed in moderation. Although leaner cuts of meat are available, a meal made with ground turkey contains more calories than a meal of beef or chicken.
